Murder On Anonomy Part Five

My Blog :

Hello World ! (You can edit this later on)

Day 17

I have discovered something rather  worrying on Bogworld. It seems you can challenge other users to a duel; if you win, you effectively delete their account. Likewise, if they beat you, your account is deleted . . . How can I use this to my advantage ? There are plenty I can think of whom I’d love to see deleted . . .

Welcome back to Bogworld ! We missed you ! You have a new friend invite.

‘Hi. I am Legion.’

‘Hi, Legion. Come here often, do you ?’

‘I am always here.’

‘Oh well, that’s interesting cos I ain’t seen you before.’

‘No. You have now, tho.’

‘Um.Yes. Um . . .so . . .I think I’ll . . .’

‘Have some wine.’

‘Wine?’

‘Yes. You like ?’

‘Um. All right.’

‘Have some more. You like ?’

‘Um, . . . that’s odd. My avatar seems to be moving about on its own.’

‘Your avatar is a little drunk. Funny, eh ?’

‘You think that’s funny ?’

Day 20

This is definitely getting a bit spooky.

Someone introduced themselves to me on Bogworld yesterday and proffered me wine. This is virtual wine, you understand. Nothing ‘real’ about it. Yet after clicking on ‘Accept’, my avatar/character, whatever you call it, started reeling about, staggering and stumbling like an idiot – on his own. Nothing I could do with mouse or keyboard could control his movements. The newbie suggested my avatar was drunk. Seemed to find the idea amusing. I’m just puzzled. It wasn’t the computer playing up either – I checked; either they have some really sophisticated gaming techno, or . . . and I emailed the site to ask whether it was part of the game. They seemed as surprised as I was; said they weren’t aware of any such ‘glitch’ as they called it, apologised and said they’d get their nerds onto it . . .

‘Hi, you have a new message from BogWorld.com. Click on the link below to access.’

Click.

‘Hi there. You have received an invite to a duel with Bogworld User Legion. Warning: Whoever wins retains their own account, but effectively deletes the loser’s account, thus causing that player to start again from scratch. You have five hours left to decline the duel.

Good luck !’

Well now, there’s a thing. What to do ? Can I win ? What if I lose ? Have I quite squeezed out everything I can get from being on here ? Time to check my account on Authonomy . . .

Muzzled : What is GOING ON ???? (Sorry, beginning to sound like MuppetMonster)

MuppetMonster : ARE YOU IMPERSONATING ME ?????

Muzzled : But seriously, has anyone seen what’s going on at the Desk ? Mutual back-patting, mutual shelving  – is this what we’re supposed to be doing ?

MuppetMonster : I OUGHT TO ARREST YOU !!!! 😀

Nefarious : Right, who’s up for a bit of mutual backing ? Happy to oblige! 😀 😀

Muzzled : I thought this was supposed to be a serious writing site, with some kind of ethical behaviour . . .

PsychoGrunge : Since when ? This has been a gaming site from the off.

Nefarious : Aww, it did start off with a different spirit.

!!Anon : When will you people understand  : this is a SLUSHPILE ! – To show the publishing world  what you’re made of, how good you are at networking, promoting – all those guys at the top are doing is precisely that ! Get over it !

BuleLog : Yeh, you’ve not been doing too badly yourself, have  you : 312 shelves in a month, 500 comments – must be galling even for you though, that you’ve been overtaken.

!!Anon : So they have more time to network than I have. At least I don’t have the hypocrisy to go about whining because they’re doing better than me.

BuleLog : Who’s the hypocrite ? Some of us have been trying to follow the rules.

Nefarious : What rules ? First I’ve heard of it 😉

!!Anon : Where is it written on Anonomy that there are RULES ???? Go learn to read.

BuleLog : For your information, I have a degree in English Literature – which does require a certain amount of reading, by the way.

!!Anon: Oh get over yourself.

Muzzled : Guys, guys, you’re hijacking this thread – please take your fight elsewhere ! My point is, the system is broke – which can’t be what Anonomy wants – and after all, if they want the best to reach the top so ideally they can publish half-way decent books,  . . . doesn’t it make sense to mend the system so gamers are kept well out of it ?

Anonomy Admin : We agree the site has some problems which we shall be looking into in the near future: however, we would like to emphasize that no rules have been broken.

Anonomy Forum :

The place to discuss writing, reading, books and publishing . . .

Thread : Response  to Gaming Tactics Thread :

KittyMouse : Hi, everyone, in response to the earlier thread, this is just to say that I have not broken any rules as far as I know – and I think Anonomy Admin would have told me if that was the case: it’s true a lot of people are backing my books – but that doesn’t mean I asked them to – I don’t even know all of them !

I may take my book down before the end of the week as I have had interest shown by an editor and two separate agents. I hope everyone gets a chance at being published, I really do.

Love to y’all !

BlurbTicket : Hey KittyMouse, don’t go yet. At least get the review first ! Then go 😀

NightSnuff : We’re all behind you, KittyMouse, GO girl, GO!!!! J.

Prowler : Still a cute avi 😉 You show’em, don’t given in to those bullies.

Day 22

This is . . . unbelievable. Not only has that little creep KittyMouse copied my tactics for shooting to the top, she’s been mutually backing two others over and ABOVE mine – and now says she has an editor and TWO agents sniffing at her manuscript ! Can you believe that ? Cos I can’t.

-And now,  she has the nerve to start up a thread taking the Humble Pie Line . .. where’s the sick bucket . . .and as for those other two, Ripe Tomatoes and PinkSocks . . .

Right. I have it. A new strategy. I shall back books endlessly for the next 6 hours – longer, if possible. And I shall encourage others to do the same . . on a thread. See what happens to their system gaming tactics THEN !

VileWords : I have just looked at this book (Murder on Anonomy) – so far, there have been over 800 backings in the last week, yet most of the backers have no profile, no book up, no avi . . what gives ? Are these just a load of phantom members ? Do they even exist ?
UnHinged : They don’t have to have a book up in order to back. We need readers, after all.
VileWords : No, but they don’t come across as genuine readers either – the only other book some of them have on their shelves is another newbie ‘Evening Out’ . . plus nearly all these backers signed up on the same day . . .something smells of rat to me . .

PinkSocks : Hi, you there ?
Ripe Tom : I’m here. Thnx for email. I just signed up to Bogworld, username Oh Wilde so you know which one is me. What next ? What’s the plan ?
PS: We beat him at his own game : make friends, get them onto Anonomy to back our books (and maybe diss his too . . . ) maybe take some of his friends prisoner on Bogworld, even take over his area – what you think ?
RT: Dunno. Could work. Isn’t there something more final we could do? Like getting him banned from the web ? LOL. Ok, but maybe we need some more people.
PS : I was talking to Grunge – I think he’ll join in too.
RT : How much time is this going to take ?
PS : Look how quickly he got where he is , just on his own – with three of us ?
RT : Ok, I should be writing really . . . but I’ll get onto it.
PS : When you like. See you there, then – Oh Wilde LOL
RT : Ok.

Day 13
Well, it’s just got more exciting. Since becoming a pirate and starting a mutiny, we made a few walk the plank and have now taken over the island. Quite enjoying this so far. Oh, and every time I add a friend to my crew, I send them a link to my book on Anonomy, plus the Utube video showing them how to back. Networking. Way to go. I’ve started taking prisoners too. 400 so far, to be exact. And what do the prisoners have to do to be free ? Back my book, Simples. Took another 40 prisoners just ten minutes ago . . . My book has now jumped a total of 160 places in half that time, what with my groups, prisoners, friends as well as a paltry few fellow Anonomers.

So far, this has gone pretty smoothly, which makes me wonder what is going to go wrong . . .
Should be on the Editor’s Desk by the end of this month at this rate.

Of course, there are those on Anonomy who evince some displeasure at the speed with which ‘Murder on Anonomy’ is shooting up through the ranks; more ‘death threats’ . . if rather muted this time, since the last member to do that got his account deleted . . . Not a lot I or anyone else can do anyway, as to all intents and purposes I have done nothing that actually break any rules. It’s all just a question of promotion. And I don’t have to back peoples’ books if I don’t think much of them . . .Think I’ll do some more ‘comments’ – oh, and ratings. Don’t want competition after all. . .

Do you want to go to level 2 ?’

Mmmm. Don’t know if I do. Quite happy here. Perhaps I’ll go and take some more prisoners . . .another island . . .I’ve only covered a small area so far – there must be masses more people around here . . .

‘Welcome to Virtual Bogworld ! You have a new friend request!’
‘Hello, Puke. Whiskers wants to be your friend.’
‘Welcome aboard, Whiskers. Do you want to be a prisoner, or back my book straight away to save time ?’
‘Uh, I don’t know. Do I have a choice ?’
‘Well, you’ve landed on my island, so it’s imprisonment or back my book ! Or clean up my garden shed.’
‘Think I’ll clean the shed then . .’
‘Ok. You’ll still have to back my book, though.’
‘Geez.’

Murder on Anonomy Part Two

Now this is where it starts to become hard work.
I jump to the Virtual World that is Bog – nice scenery, some sort of island with vegetation and strange looking animals. And people. Apparently, I am supposed to be one of those people. I am immediately told to ‘create my personality’. Create my personality ? As though my own personality is invisible and immaterial. Well, to be honest, we are all invisible on the web. Anonymous doesn’t quite cover it. Invisible and often impotent. Something else most of the characters spend a lot of time going on about.
Back to the character building though : you click on a box, right, and up comes an androgynous cartoon figure. All quite cute so far. I then have to click on wardrobe, wig, shoes, and face. There’s pirate, slave, concubine, merchant trader, shopkeeper . . . I continue to run through the range and settle for gardener. No poet or writer characters here, you see. Have indeed emailed BlogWorld about this very issue, as it seems to me to be somewhat prejudiced. I may have to subvert this whole set up as well as Anonomy, we’ll see how it goes.
Anyway, there I am, in clogs, straw hat, dungerees and equipped with bucket and rake – looking more ready for building sand castles on the beach than actual gardening – the next thing I know I’m accosted by some night guards (who were certainly NOT one of the optional characters) and kidnapped. My present virtual environment appears to be some local aristo’s garden shed. I am allowed out once I have tidied up flower pots lying about on the ground. Not sure I have time for this . . .

. . . Click.

Murder on Anonomy Part One

It’s blinking at you again. You didn’t switch it off after all, did you. Just one twitch of the mouse, and up comes the screen. Warm, inviting colours, user-friendly lay out . . . what’s not to like about it ? Irresistibly drawn, you approach warily, however. Things have been hotting up recently, and you’re not quite sure how to respond. The website has been taking over your life, after all. Family and friends (or the nearest equivalent) have faded rather with time, because you have only time for the new friends you’ve made online. No time to feel guilty about this though, as you are continuously peeking at the ratings of your own profile and book . . . just to make sure they haven’t slipped . . . only they have, there’s that nasty red arrow popping up again. And you know who’s behind it. Time for plan of action.

It all started while googling for publishers. This link came up for a new website for writers, promising the reward of publication for those prepared to read, evaluate and back books . . .endlessly.

Click.

‘Congratulations ! You have now uploaded your book to Anonomy.com !  Don’t forget, your ranking will improve the more active you are on the site : reviewing, backing – and of course, promoting your own work on the forums . . .’

Of course, what anonomy neglected to mention was all the obsessing, addiction, neurosis and general irritation at the behaviour of other members.

Not to mention the comments. Usually by those engaged in the extreme promotion of their own work.

‘Comment : I cannot back this, in all fairness. It requires too much work.

Comment : I cannot back this, in all fairness. It requires too much work.

Comment : Is it the end of the world ? Is there one man, and one alone, who can save it ? Read my book and see ! (Return of the Lurgi)

Comment : Huh ?

Comment : I like this. A lot. Now please back mine.

Comment : Hi, I am Reckless Gee, I love your book and have put it on my shelf. Backing a book pushes it up the ranks. The longer you keep it there, the more points it gains. I would like it so much if you backed my five books.

Comment : Don’t take any notice of Reckless Gee. He’s totally off his head. Instead, when you have time, would you have a peek at mine ? Horses for courses. BTW, I shelved yours.’

By the end of week one, you have risen by one place, and all the others around you are shooting up the ranks. Mmmmmmm. . . strategy, strategy, strategy . . . A bit of their own medicine is required, perhaps . . .

 My Blog :

Hello World ! (You can edit this later on)

Well, day 9 online and already the casualties are coming in thick and fast.

Comment number 4 ‘Dear Bloggs, your work stinks, I wouldn’t back this if it were the last book on earth. Oh, and you spelled antiestablishment all rong.’

And so on.  About 20 so far today, and another 20 planned after tea. Now they’ve brought in star ratings, I have been busy there as well. And another number one. And one. And one again. Trouble is, you have to be crafty, cause if you do that unremittingly, admin will even them all out, and ratchet them up a bit. SO, the thing is to vary them ever so slightly. Two stars. And one star. And two stars. And one star. Quite a pretty pattern actually.

Same goes for the comments.

Comment number 3 ‘Dear Bloggs, while this shows promise, you have yet to grasp the basic tools of narrative.’

Day 4 :

Well, after 24 hours of incessant plugging and character assassination, I have received my first real death threat – virtually, anyway. Quite interesting language, too.

My next plan of action : open some threads on the forum. Idle chitchat, shameless plugging and a few threads on how nobody knows who to write. Which is why essentially my work should be shooting to the top.

Oh, and make some friends online. Quickly. They could come in handy.

Networking – it’s the name of the game. Move over Brucie. I’m on my way. And I don’t need to tap-dance either.
